SoundScraper experimental sound design app

The iPad Loops music app blog is proud to share news about SoundScaper by Igor Vasiliev

SoundScaper is an experimental sound mini lab for creating unusual soundscapes, atmospheric textures, drones, glitches and noises based on circuit bending ideas.

It manages to make some deep and complex DSP processing available to virtually anyone. I’m well impressed by both the concept and execution here. Immensely powerful, deep, and most importantly: musical – useful for sound design and composition. The diversity of textures and tones that are possible… very inspiring.

With this application you can easily experiment with creating new and unusual sounds from ordinary samples. For sound designers and those interested in creating ambient or experimental electronic music, with filtering and mixing of up to three oscillators, you can create excellent soundscapes, textures and drones for your music or for movie soundtrack or entertainment apps and games. With complete MIDI control this application is very comfortable to use for real-time sound creation and at live performance.

The oscillators, based on simulating schematics of actual 8 bit lofi sound playback chips, have circuit bending like controls that are ideal for making glitches, noises, crackles and granular sounds. Combined with the filtering and spatial mixing options, you can expand these sounds to deep and atmospheric textures. Finally you can add motion and continuous changes to your sounds via low frequency oscillators which can control the filter and mixer parameters.

Controls based on shorting and modifications of standard circuits of sound generating devices usually give random and unpredictable changes that can be very creative. The emulation of these kinds of controls within SoundScaper are very similar to the circuit bending principle but, additionally, have several advanced functions that are not easy to realize in actual devices. This allows you to make any changes in the virtual circuit on the fly and immediately hear the new sound without fear of the kinds of damage that might occur in a real device as a result of a failed modification.

Tape Delay for iPad

Back in the “old days”, producers and engineers created delay and echo effects using tape machines. Tap Delay combines the warm sound of vintage tape echo machines with a modern, step sequencer-like tapped delay engine which continues the tradition of the tape echo machines into the 21st century.

The Tape simulation includes all relevant aspects for the recreation of a faithful analog tape sound:

• Compression and Saturation
• Tape hiss
• Tape head bias
• Wow and Flutter (Tape speed instability)
• Smooth speed / delay time changes

Three feedback filters with hipass/lowpass and bandpass characteristic simplify the creation of authentic dub echo effects.

The built-in Limiter allows for endless feedback sounds.

Use live input from any source – Microphone, Guitar, Audiobus and Inter App Audio – or take a song from your iTunes library for processing.

Features:

• Multi-tap delay machine
• 24 taps for rhythmic delay effects
• Tape simulation ( Saturation, Noise, Flutter )
• Alias free tape saturation through oversampling.
• MIDI controllable including Tempo sync
• Delay loop equalizer for dub effect.
• Glitch free simulation of variable tape speeds.
• Spatial echo rotation effect.
• Audiobus 2 compatible with state saving
• IAA compatible ( Auria, Cubasis, Garageband ).
• Integrated iTunes player.

Frobulator Filter and Delay For iOS

Frobulator filter delay iPad

Frobulator (by Matthew Caldwell) is an experimental stereo modulated filter and delay effect. A combination of time and frequency domain processing gives it a different sound to a normal echo box. The special “FAIL” mode adds chaotic variations driven by an iterative map — perfect for those times when your music is just too harmonious and listenable.

Apply Frobulator to live audio input, or connect with other music apps like GarageBand via Inter-App Audio or Audiobus. Frobulator supports Audiobus state saving and has IAA host transport controls.

NB: to avoid some nasty feedback, Frobulator is muted by default if you’re using the built-in microphone and speakers on your iOS device. If you aren’t getting any sound out, try pressing the mute button.

ApeDelay Stereo Spectral Delay For iPad

Ape Delay

apeDelay – Implements up to 2048 Stereo Spectral Delay lines with Feedback. The algorithm is based on the STFT (i.e. Short Time Fourier Transform) analysis/re-synthesis. The audio signal is converted in abstract ‘Frequency Domain’, where is manipulated and transformed back again in ‘Time Domain’. You can draw three shapes for the Times, Feedbacks and Panning. This is achieved from the multi sliders, who provide a great tool to manage the huge numbers of parameters. You can also benefit of more advanced spectral manipulations like the Spectral Blur, Granulate, Bins Decimator and Freeze.

– Audiobus and Inter-App Audio support (sender and FX)
– Built In Stereo Sampler with varispeed and scrubbing
– Control Manager LFO for all the Parameters
– Midibus, Virtual Midi and Network: 14 bit NRPN controllers
– File Manager, sharing common audio files via iTunes, Dropbox and AudioCopy
– Snapshots Presets Morphing Pad
– Post Fx: Stereo Delay, Amazing ClassicVerb Low/Hi Shelving and Dynamic Processor

Korvpressor Audio Compressor For iPad

Korvpressor

Korvpressor* is an adaptive compressor / limiter that’s usable in many different ways. It has a super-simple UI, a whole new ”physical” take on how to tame and visualize a compressor.

The controls are minimal – set the input gain, level of compression, and the output gain. However, don’t be mislead by this simplicity. Under the hood is a sophisticated set of algorithms, developed together with a team from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm. The compression algorithm was designed with transparency in mind, and Korvpressor will sound great on almost any kind of sound; all from a vocal track to a full blown mix. If you push it even harder, it gives a nice squeezing effect.

Besides the compression unit there are three controls for low, mid and high frequency gains.

*Korv = Sausage (Swedish)
In addition to the compression unit there are three knobs for controlling low, mid and high frequency gains.

Korvpressor supports Inter App Audio and Audiobus (including state saving).

Noteworthy features:

• Algorithm developed by a team of engineers and professional musicians

• Intuitive and unique user interface

• Enable/Disable lookahead time

• Inter App Audio (IAA) compatible.

• Supports Audiobus 2 including state saving.

• Load / Save user presets

Korvpressor is available for $4.99 for a limited time

  • iPad Loops is an iOS music production blog dedicated to exposing the best iPad apps musicians, producers, and Djs. This is not a database of every app. It is, however, one of useful recommendations from someone with many years in music production. I try to update it on a daily basis (ok sometimes every two days) and I do my best to post useful apps only. My name is Jason Donnelly (Dj Puzzle). Some of the apps that contain my sounds are Synth One, EG Segments, Hammerhead, Retronyms AudioCopy, Audio Evolution Mobile, and iMPC Pro. My work is published by Roland, Antares, Magix, Soundtrack Loops, Sample Logic, Acoustica, Native Instruments, The Grammt Museum and many more.
