Ribn MIDI controller with ribbons
Author View comments Tags Tags: , , , ,

Ribn is a MIDI controller with 8 assignable ribbons. What makes Ribn unique is its ability to record and loop your finger movement. This allows you to add organic repeating modulation to your synths and effects, kind of like complex LFOs. You can assign a unique MIDI channel and CC# to each ribbon. As long as your gear responds to MIDI CC messages you will be able to control it with Ribn.

** FEATURES **
• 8 MIDI CC ribbon pads
• Add modulation to your MIDI hardware synths, effects, eurorack modulars, drum machines, etc.
• Configurable MIDI channel and CC# per ribbon
• Ribbons record and loop your finger movement
• Looping can be turned off to enable standard ribbon sliders
• Choose 2, 4 or 8 ribbons
• Use a wired MIDI interface, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi
• All settings are saved automatically
• Works on iPhone (including iPhone X) and iPad

** EXAMPLE USES **
• Control hardware MIDI synths parameters like the filter cutoff frequency, resonance, oscillator octave, etc.
• Control any soft synth in Ableton Live (or your favorite DAW) by connecting your iOS device to your Mac via Wi-Fi and choosing “Session 1” as the MIDI output in Ribn.
• Control your Eurorack modules by running Ribn through a MIDI to CV converter.
• Control drum machines and effects. For example, try controlling the room size of a reverb effect unit with a looping ribbon or the snappiness of a snare drum on a drum machine. The possibilities are endless.
• Daisy chain your MIDI hardware using MIDI Thru ports and assign each ribbon to a different MIDI channel. This way you can control more than one piece of hardware at a time. For example, you can assign the first 4 ribbons to a synth and the last 4 to an effect unit.

** HOW IT WORKS **
• Connect your MIDI gear (like a synth) to your iOS device using a MIDI interface (wired or bluetooth)
• Launch Ribn and select your MIDI interface in the settings page.
• Find out which CC# and MIDI channel your gear responds to (usually at the end of the manual) and enter this information in RIbn’s edit view.
• Slide your finger on a ribbon to send CC values and control the parameters on your MIDI gear.

** WHAT IS MIDI AND CC? **
• MIDI is just the way electronic musical instruments talk to each other.
• CC (Continuous Controller) is just a way to control various parameters using MIDI. For example, a synth’s filter cutoff frequency can be controlled using a MIDI CC signal.

** NOTE **
• Ribn is a MIDI controller and doesn’t produce any sounds. To use Ribn you must connect it to a device that responds to MIDI CC signals (check your gear’s manual to be sure).
• Ribn doesn’t send note data, it only sends CC signals (you can’t play melodies with it, but you can control various parameters like synthesizer filters, or effects settings).
• To connect your iOS device to MIDI gear you will need to buy a MIDI interface. A MIDI interface typically connects to your iOS lightning port and provides standard MIDI DIN ports to connect to your hardware. There are also bluetooth MIDI interfaces that connect wirelessly. Alternatively, you can connect to your Mac over Wi-Fi and control software synths that way. This setup is a little more complex but totally doable (I’ve tested controlling Ableton Live plugins over Wi-Fi with Ribn and it worked perfectly).

ScaleBud music scales for iOS

ScaleBud is a music theory tool for composers, artists and learners. It has more than 40 most popular scales and counting. AUv3 Plugin, Audiobus MIDI Sending/ Filtering and Standalone app included.

It has a very simple, single-view interface that you can choose the scale and key you want to work as well as note or chord mode selector on the left side. Right side lists the scale notes or chords you want to work with. In note mode, you can fastly jump between notes in the scale by selecting them from the list. In chord mode, you can see the triad, 7th, 9th, 11th or 13th chords for each note in the scale. You can jump between them quickly as well, by pressing the chord you want to play from keyboard. Also, in chord mode, you can set the octave you want to play for the chords from left side of the keyboard.

ScaleBud comes with an AUv3 MIDI plugin and standalone versions. You can directly control your iOS, Mac or PC audio apps with CoreMIDI. Just open the settings menu and select the MIDI Out you want to send MIDI to.

ScaleBud also supports Audiobus MIDI Sending and Filtering. You can send MIDI from Audiobus 3 app just like regular CoreMIDI workflow. Also, in Audiobus MIDI Filter mode, you can feed MIDI Input data from your hardware or MIDI app, and ScaleBud filters out the off-scale notes in note mode, or plays the corresponding chord, if any available, for each note, like a chorder, in chord mode.

You can use ScaleBud with Audio Unit version 3 hosts like Audiobus 3, AUM, Cubasis 2, Beat Maker 3, apeMatrix and Sequencism. As an audio unit plugin, it both maps/filters your MIDI Input to the MIDI Output you route, and sends the notes/chords you pressed from its keyboard. In chord mode, you can press any type of chord from the list in order to make chorder generate chords in that type. For example if you press a 7th chord, it will generate 7th chords for each note you send it from your MIDI keyboard.

Also, it has several presets but you can save your custom presets with the supported hosts. So, you can quickly jump between keys, scales and chords you want to work with.

ScaleBud is not an audio app. It just creates or filters MIDI data coming from input and sends them to MIDI output. It does not generate any sound in any mode.
You can always send feedback for bug reports, feature requests or rate the app from the Support section in Settings menu.

Standalone app requires iOS 10.0+
AUv3 plugin requires iOS 11.0+ and a supporting host app.

StreamByter MIDI Processor AU
StreamByter is a plugin for creating custom MIDI effects. It can be used as an Apple Audio Unit (AU) effect or as a standalone app connected via CoreMIDI virtual ports. StreamByter is ported from our acclaimed MidiFire MIDI processing environment.

An iOS device (minimum iOS 11) and a suitable AU host app such as AUM, apeMatrix, Cubasis or Sequencism is required to use the AU variant. To use with CoreMIDI, a routing app like MidiFire is recommended and an iOS device with at least iOS 8 is required.

Use StreamByter to:

– Extend the MIDI processing functionality of any AU host.
– Remap channels, notes, controllers (anything MIDI)
– Filter MIDI events coarsely or finely
– Clone or Delay any event
– Send any event automatically when plugin is loaded
– Create complex effects using programming concepts like conditionals, loops, variables (including array, timing and random), and math operators.

StreamByter is configured using a textual rules ‘language’ that defines how the effect should operate. Please see the support link to go to our website for full details.

ArpBud MIDI Sequencer + More
Author View comments Tags Tags: , , , ,

ArpBud has two main sequencers: the interval sequencer and the pitch sequencer, with unlimited number of steps for both. You can design your arpeggios by interval values in interval sequencer. And you can drive your arpeggios with a pitch sequencer by applying the pitch to each interval value of the interval sequence. Every step of pitch sequencer has its own interval sequencer. So, you are free to work on a single arpeggio as well as multiple arpeggios.

You can set the pitch bend, modulation and portamento MIDI control change values for interval sequencer steps. Also, you can set the rate, volume and loop count for each pitch sequencer step. You can copy/paste steps in between. And you can load other sequencers you have in your other projects.

You can set the layout of your projects and set the behavior of the knobs, or touch control gestures from the settings menu. It works for every screen sizes of iPhones and iPads. If you have an iPad user, you can take advantage of the split view feature and place both ArpBud and your audio MIDI app in one screen for working on them at the same time.

You can drive your favorite audio MIDI apps on your iOS or Mac/PC, like Garageband, Ableton Live, FMPlayer, Model 15 etc. ArpBud also supports Audiobus MIDI, IAA and Ableton Link for fitting into your current workflow. When you are not sequencing, if you have enabled any MIDI input (Audiobus MIDI app, connected hardware or other MIDI sending apps) for ArpBud, it will sequence the currently active interval sequencer for the playing MIDI input data.
