AK-7 Core is an inexpensive wireless MIDI keyboard controller for iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. It features a full-size realistic 3d piano keyboard which you can zoom and slide around to find the range of notes you want to play.
It works great with Apple’s Garageband, MainStage and Logic as well as any other DAW which supports MIDI input.
It also includes a switchable piano sound set for practicing anywhere without a MIDI connection.
There are options to change the view between 3d and 2d views, as well as standard MIDI options such as transpose, MIDI channel select etc.
Velocity is adjustable and is based on the position you hit each key. There are pitch bend and modulation sliders on the main screen too. (these only affect the MIDI output, not the onboard sound)
The wireless MIDI works using CoreMIDI so so additional drivers are needed on a Mac. Windows users will need to use a driver such as “rtpMIDI”.
On an iPad, it’s possible to use the Camera Connection Kit and a USB to MIDI cable to make a direct wired MIDI connection to your music workstation if there’s no wifi available.
Supported devices:
iPad 1 and iPad2
iPhone 3GS or newer
iPod Touch 3rd generation or newer

MidiPads is a drum pad controller for the iPad and sports 64 drum pads, which can be resized in both size and area. The bottom part is fully configurable by the user with resizable touchpads, sliders and buttons. Both sliders and touchpads support snapping to a value, fading to the touch position (duration user-configurable) and bouncing. One very unique feature is the drumpad-integrated X/Y-controller: Change your instruments’ or your effects’ sound just by moving your finger while still triggering – very useful also for DJ software like Traktor Pro.
All elements can be edited by the user: Color, label, details can be changed for each element individually, Midi channel and Midi CC/Key can even be set per sender – and each element supports multiple of them per event. Sliders, drumpads and buttons can receive incoming Midi values:
Sliders act as VU meters, drumpads/buttons glow depending on the incoming value.

The IK Multimedia iRig STOMP is the latest of many to wear the iRig name and it appears IK are going back to their roots by combining a guitar and an iPhone. The new iRig STOMP is a device inspired from previous guitar amp apps like AmpliTube, and allows the player to use it within a typical pedal board.
The design of the IK iRig STOMP is to look and work like a standard guitar effect stompbox. On the top of the pedal it has a mini-jack socket suitable for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. On the left side are two separate left and right jack outputs and on the right a ¼” jack socket for the guitar input. On the face is a large button switch and an input level control knob. The whole thing works by essentially introducing the iPhone into the effect chain to get maximum innovation for as little space as possible. For this same reason they employed a battery to increase headroom and reduce crosstalk. This is unlike the original iRig, which shows both that IK are learning from their mistakes and also future models will consistently improve.
Obviously the headphone slot is being used on the iPhone so iRig have introduced a headphone slot on the STOMP so you can do some late night practicing. Perhaps the best feature on the iRig STOMP is that it isn’t restricted to one app so as long it uses the iPhone’s jack connection you can experiment and find the right one for you. AmpliTube would be the free option but depending on what results you want, you may want to shop around for a bit.
I honestly don’t think we’ve reached the potential the iPhone/iPad could have on the creation of music and would even go as far to say it could revolutionize music as we know it. I believe the iRig STOMP is a benchmark and a sign of what could be, and who knows with this pedal and the right app in the right hands; the sky is the limit!

iPad Loops is an iOS music production blog dedicated to exposing the best iPad apps musicians, producers, and Djs. This is not a database of every app. It is, however, one of useful recommendations from someone with many years in music production. I try to update it on a daily basis (ok sometimes every two days) and I do my best to post useful apps only. My name is Jason Donnelly (Dj Puzzle).
You might know me from my royalty free loop packs and sound design. Some of the apps that contain my sounds are Synth One, EG Segments, Hammerhead, Retronyms AudioCopy, Audio Evolution Mobile, LP-5, iPRO.DJSAMPLER, Looptastic. My work is published by Roland, Antares, Magix, Soundtrack Loops, Sample Logic, Acoustica, Loopmasters and many more. Subscribe to our RSS feed below to get updated when new apps are posted.
