LINK to MIDI = Ableton Link to MIDI Clock Sync. This FREE app connects Ableton Link to musical devices that support MIDI Clock Sync. Simply join a Link session, connect your MIDI device, and that’s it. Your MIDI device is now Link-enabled.
WHY USE IT?
In musical setups that include Link, LINK to MIDI makes a connected MIDI device behave like a Link-enabled device.
More specifically, using LINK to MIDI’s Play button, you can start and stop the connected device at any time, and the device will start playing, in phase, at the next quantization tick — set by the Launch Quantization parameter on the main interface.
This is contrast to the typical MIDI Sync implementation, which requires all connected devices to start at the same time and continue playing — otherwise, if you stop, you risk losing beat phase.
NOTE: This is essentially LINK to MIDI’s only function!
It may not seem like a big deal, but the freedom to turn your devices ON and OFF at any time can have a huge effect on workflow (at least it does for me).
Also, when the transports of all your devices behave in a consistent way — whether it’s Ableton Live, a Link-enabled iOS app (like Fugue Machine!), or a drum machine built 30 years ago — it’s, well, pretty nice.
Link To Midi
Attack Drums is a synthesizer designed mainly for drum sounds, but the powerful sound engine can also be used for everything else – including vocals. Based on the Waldorf Attack VST PlugIn from 2001, it consists of a 24-part sound engine, now packed with a pattern sequencer and a versatile effects section.
One highlight of the effects section is the new Phrase Vocoder, a vocoder that uses written text instead of spoken words. Lyrics in – song out, adjust gender as you have always wanted.

Here’s another example of syncing apps within the same iOS device using virtual midi. This example is using Polychord and MoDrum. Polychord is one of the first few apps to use this new feature but all apps will support this very soon.
The upcoming MIDI update to polychord lets you do some exciting and powerful new tricks with your iPad. Now you’ll be able to have your music apps talk to each other, while they run in the background, and use polychord to control them.
In this video we show how polychord can control another app (MoDrum) running in the background — all through virtual MIDI, all without any cables. Polychord sends MIDI clock signals out, keeping everything in sync.
