Text-To-Speech

Working with vocals can be a lot of fun when a computer does the speaking. Below is my recommendation of text to speech apps for iOS. Do you know of some that aren’t listed? Is so please comment below.

iSpeech – FREE (in app voice expansions)

iSpeech is a really simple cut and dry text to speech app. Not really designed for fun. More for practical purposes although they do have voices like Obama for example. Type in text and listen with the iSpeech App. iSpeech converts text to speech with the best sounding voices anywhere. Simply enter any text and iSpeech will instantly read the words. The iSpeech App is powered by the iSpeech.org Text to Speech (TTS) software as a service (SaaS) API.

Vox 3000 – $0.99 (free lite version available)

Enjoy the retro nostalgia of VOX 3000, a speech synthesis application complete with a custom green screen computer interface and keyboard. Type any collection of words on the loud over-sized keys and the VOX 3000 will say it for you to the best of its ability.

*VOX 3000 uses a specially designed loudness maximizer to make the synthesized voice as loud as possible.
*Save your favorite phrases in the phrase bank for use again later.
*Copy phrases to the clipboard so that you can paste them into AudioPaste compatible apps (e.g., FourTrack).

Waldorf Attack – $19.99

Waldorf Attack has a Phrase Vocoder, a vocoder that uses written text instead of spoken words. Lyrics in – song out, adjust gender as you have always wanted. It’s a bit more complicated to use BUT the results are outstanding. It’s much more than just a text to speech synthesizer hence the price.

Nave – $19.99 (iPad ONLY)
Waldorf Nave is a very powerful synthesizer hence the price that comes with a killer text to speech synthesizer. It’s a little bit of a learning curve but well worth it.

Realbeat – $2.99

Realbeat is a fun sampler for iSO that also has a speech to text feature. Record your voice, your fridge, your neighbour’s dog or let your iPhone or iPad speak and make rhythms out of the sounds immediately. It’s very simple to use.

Midi Over Bluetooth For iPad iPhone

Apollo Midi Over Bluetooth

MIDI connections between iOS devices have been a continual problem; hardware MIDI adapters are expensive and bulky, while MIDI over WiFi introduces too much latency.

With Apollo, MIDI can be sent over Bluetooth wireless connections, eliminating hardware adapters, and providing much lower latency than is possible with WiFi. Apollo uses Bluetooth LE: this is supported by the iPad3 and newer, the iPad Mini, the iPhone 4s and newer, and recent Mac desktop and laptop computers.

* Intro pricing — get it now! *

Want to use your iPad as a midi controller for an app on your iPhone? You can with Apollo.

** Important ** Apollo is not compatible with the iPad1 and 2, and the iPhone4 and earlier. Please make sure that your device supports Bluetooth LE.

Install the app on two iOS devices, select an “A” endpoint for one, and a “B” endpoint for the other. Press the search button on both, and a Bluetooth connection will be established. After connecting, MIDI messages sent to Apollo running on one device will be forwarded to the other — and these messages can then be redirected to synthesizer or sequencer apps.

In addition to MIDI connections between iOS devices, Apollo can also be used to connect to Mac desktop and laptop computers. Recent iMacs and MacBooks support Bluetooth LE; for older Macs, a USB Bluetooth adapter may be required. The OSX version of Apollo will be available in the Mac app store shortly. We have also made the OSX version available on the support web page, so that you can get the app prior to the release in the Mac App Store.

Visit the support web link for a video demo and more details about the app.

Apollo is available for $2.99

BlueBoard Blue Tooth Pedal Board

NAMM: iRig BlueBoard Announced
The first Bluetooth MIDI pedalboard for iPhone, iPad and Mac
23 January 2013

Winner of the iLounge “Best in Show” at the recent CES, iRig® BlueBoard, a groundbreaking new Bluetooth MIDI pedalboard for iPhone, iPad and Mac, which gives you: the guitarists, bassists and keyboard players hands-free control of mobile and Mac music apps.

iRig BlueBoard is a great addition to any mobile or studio rig for live performance and recording. You can use it to extend control of your preferred music apps by switching presets, changing sounds or modifying effects parameters – all hands-free. You don’t have to put down your instrument, and can remain focused on your performance.

Any music app or software that is MIDI compatible (the standard communication protocol for musical instruments) – such as IK’s AmpliTube, VocaLive, SampleTank, iGrand – or any other Core-MIDI-compatible app like Apple GarageBand, can be operated wirelessly with iRig BlueBoard.

This ultra-portable unit uses Bluetooth 4.0 technology to transmit the actions of its four onboard, backlit footswitches and its two optional external pedals to the mobile device or Mac. Then using the included iRig BlueBoard app and software, the Bluetooth signals are converted into MIDI messages and routed internally to the music app that’s running on the device.

Because it’s wireless, iRig BlueBoard lets you setup onstage without being tethered to your mobile device. The unit’s range is 10 meters (over 32 feet), giving musicians a great deal of mobility to roam the stage that would be impossible with a wired unit. Because the footswitches are backlit, they’re easy to see in all lighting conditions, even on a dark stage. Additionally, the fact that iRig uses wireless Bluetooth leaves all the wired ports of the device free, so they can be used simultaneously by interfaces or controllers that feature the 30-pin or Lightning connector, like IK’s iRig HD, iRig MIDI or iRig Keyboard, and adapters or microphones that use the device mini-jack such as iRig or iRig MIC.

Features:

Bluetooth MIDI pedalboard (10m/32.8′ range)
4 backlit switches for sending program, bank and other MIDI messages
2 1/4″ inputs for optional expression pedals or switches that can used for sending continuous controller or on/off messages
BlueBoard iOS app runs in background on mobile device or Mac, and translates Bluetooth messages to MIDI
Runs on standard AAA batteries
Small enough to fit in a laptop bag

Pricing and Availability

iRig BlueBoard is priced at $99.99 / €79.99 MSRP (excl. tax) IK Multimedia iRig Blueboard wireless floor controller

How To Make A Ringtone In Garageband For iPhone

How To Make A Ringtone Garageband 1.3

Version 1.3 of Garageband for iPad, iPod, and iPhone was announced today. The good news is it has some cool new features. The bad news is some of the features are not compatible with older iOS devices.

Now you can make your own ringtones from within your iPhone. The following is a tutorial that will show you how to make a ringtone from within your iPhone using Garageband Ver 1.3. Also, this app makes full use of the larger iPhone 5 display size (duh it’s an Apple product).

First off, there are two ways to get your own tunes (songs you produced and didn’t purchase from iTunes) into your ringtones from within your iPhone using Garageband. The first is to create a song within Garageband version 1.3 or later and simply send it to your ringtones using the new ringtone feature in Garageband.

It’s quite simple. Create a song. Save it.

Garageband-iPhone-Ringtone-Tutorial-Save

Hit the down arrow in the top left hand corner.

Garageband iPhone Ringtone Tutorial Step 1

Select the tune you want to be your ringtone (it will be highlighted with a green frame). Hit the Share button (Rectangle with arrow in it).

Garageband iPhone Ringtone Tutorial 1_2

Select “My Songs”.

Garageband iPhone Ringtone Tutorial 1_3

Hit “Edit”.

Garageband iPhone Ringtone Tutorial Step 2

Scroll down to “Share song as ringtone”.

Their is another way to get pre-existing songs that you have mixed down and added to your iTunes library into your ringtones and that is to import them from from the “Loop” section.

Garageband Ringtone iPhone Tutorial Step 3

Click on the Loop icon.

Garageband iPhone Ringtone Tutorial Step 4

You’ll see both Apple loops and Music. Select music and you’ll see your songs.

Repeat the steps above to share to your ringtones.

You can also use a desktop or notebook and import into your Garageband shared folder in iTunes from the computer. It’s just like importing loops into Garageband for iPhone as seen in this tutorial https://ipadloops.com/import-loops-in-garageband-ipad/

Now you might see a feature in Garageband for iPhone called “Copy from : iTunes”. Well ,this only works for songs you’ve purchased. (Please correct me if I’m wrong but I could not get it to see the songs I did not purchase such as my own songs). If you’re like me, you like to create your own original ringtones from songs you produced using your PC. This work around will allow you to import your tunes as loops and samples into Garageband on your iPhone and then share them directly through the phone to your ringtones. You will probably want to set a short looping section as you are limited to a set number of seconds for ringtones. It will not play your entire 6 minute epic composition =]

What’s New in Version 1.3

• Create custom ringtones and alerts for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch*
• Import songs from the Music library on your iOS device
• Play or record with GarageBand in the background while using other apps**
• Addresses a number of minor issues related to overall performance and stability

* Requires iOS 6 or later
** Requires iPhone 4S, iPad 2 or later

Garageband is available FREE

  • iPad Loops is an iOS music production blog dedicated to exposing the best iPad apps musicians, producers, and Djs. I try to update it on a daily basis (ok sometimes every two days) and I do my best to post useful apps only. My name is Jason Donnelly (Dj Puzzle). Some of the apps that contain my sounds are Synth One, EG Segments, Hammerhead, Retronyms AudioCopy, Audio Evolution Mobile, and iMPC Pro.
