Fly Tape DAW Cassette Comparison

Hello every body this is Jason Donnelly aka Dj Puzzle reporting for my website ipadloops.com and today I’m going to show you two cool new effects. Both effects emulate an old cassette tape meaning they can make your brand new sparkling mix sound like it was playing back on an old broken down tape player. On one hand we have Fly Tape by MSXII and the other DAW Cassette by Klevgrand. They are both unique in their own way and they were both released just recently within the past couple of weeeks so I wanted to do a sort of comparison review for both in one video. Now I noticed a lot of the demos for these apps show the app on a master buss affecting the whole mix so I wanted to demo them as an insert effect on a single track. In this case a midi track using an AU instrument.

*I should add “Head Quality” in DAW Cassette is the LoFi effect in that one I kinda rushed over it and skipped that info.

Sugar Bytes Synth Now Audio Unit

Unique was made for fun and vibes: Analogue sound, intense modulation and a killer set of features, delivering an amazing sonic spectrum that’s full of character: Classy sounds, powerful, warm… sometimes gritty. Each of the 2 oscillators offers a selection of 5 waveforms: sawtooth and pulse waves are here, along with noise, triple saw and triple FM waves. There’s also an additional sub-oscillator strapped into the master section for added oomph. The internal controllers will bring in the dynamics: an LFO and an envelope, there’s a recordable XY field & a sequencer. Use these to modulate any knob – a simple long tap will do. The sound springs to life when it hits the filter section. Needless to say, analogue high-pass, low-pass and band-pass varieties are in place, along with a comb filter. Standards aside, the actual intention behind this project, the Vowel Filter, also became its outstanding feature: string together two or four vowel formants and play them back in a multitude of ways. Once you’ve built your sound, there’s tons of sound polish in two chained multi-effect units.

Fly Tape FX Half Speed And More

Fly-Tape is like Gross Beat for iPhone and iPad. It’s a unique MSXII look on some of the aspects about tape that we love while adding some unique features that are enjoyable! Fly Tape installs as an iOS AUv3 FX plugin, designed for use within host apps such as Garageband, Beatmaker 3, Cubasis, Audiobus, and more. Standalone mode for demo purposes.

Named for it’s performance style of use, users can adding FX to their incoming audio signals in many ways “on the Fly.” Sliders for textured nuances such as hiss & pitch will allow you to dial in tasteful settings that can become reminiscent of cassette tapes. These also can be automated via midi cc for additional modulation.

Fly Tape FX:
Fly Tape includes numerous touch based FX. These FX also release upon button release to enhance the performance experience. Additionally, some FX have more settings upon a quick, double-tap of the effect.

Play Button
• Will start audio (demo drum loop) in standalone mode
• Disabled while in plugin mode

Stop Button
• Will stop playing audio with a scrubbing, slow down effect
• Release will resume audio

Pause Button
• A simple audio mute. Useful for drops in performance
• Release will resume audio

Bypass Switch
• Bypass Fly-Tape audio effect unit as a whole

Noise Slider
• Gradual increase of “hiss” simulation from left to right

Pitch Slider
• Gradual detuning of audio from left (normal) to right (-.50 cents)

Half-Speed FX Button
• Plays audio at half-speed
• Normal playback resumes on release
• Half-Speed will stay in time with current host tempo

Saturate Button
• 2 saturation modes “Clean” & “Gritty” available
• Quick double tap will prompt small menu option
• Release will resume normal audio without effect

Lofi Button
• 3 lofi modes “70’s”, “80’s”, and “90’s” available
• Quick double tap will prompt small menu option
• Release will resume normal audio without effect

Loop Button
• Reverses and loops audio while pressed
• Release will resume normal audio without effect

Stutter Button
• 8 stutter quantize settings available
• Quick double tap will prompt small menu option

Groove Rider Update Rearrange Tracks

Groove Rider GR-16 is a professional step-sequenced groove box, inspired by professional hardware drum machines and rhythm boxes. It has a powerful Poison-202 based two oscillator synthesizer engine, plus a big variety of included PCM drum samples, insert/send/master effects, arpeggiator, automation recording, modulator, ADSR and filter block, and more! Built-in factory pattern library includes patterns in different music styles, which will inspire you (the list will be appended with the regular updates).

Minor update (1.4.2):

– added ability to change track order on the mixer page (on iPad only), in the Settings menu -> “Mixer Order” option;
– app store rating/review prompt system changed to suspend number of rating prompts to 3 times per year (according to Apple’s documentation);
– crash fixed: It was crashing when choosing another bank in Patterns Selector without selecting any pattern in it, and then turning the Value Jog knob;
– bug fixed: it was crashing the app if certain complex midi message (e.g. SysEx) was sent to GR-16’s midi input;
– bug fixed: automation curves were sometimes displayed incorrectly;
– other minimal improvements.

One remarkable feature of GR-16 is that all the controls are arranged on one screen, just like on a real groove box device! It lets you access almost all useful parameters from the one screen. Forget about numerous sub-windows and dialogs, which ruined your inspiration in another musical apps! Groove Rider is the fastest path from your imagination to reality!

You can use GR-16 as a ready-to-go realtime musical instrument (groove box) in your jam sessions together with Ableton Link feature to synchronize it with your other music gear.
