Stereo Modulator For Mono Tracks
Author View comments Tags Tags: , , , , , ,

Ran my Les Paul through this new mono to stereo audio unit effect called Stereo Modulator. PUT YOUR HEADPHONES ON! Honestly I wish I didn’t feel rushed with this video I wanted to make it longer but figured folks might just want to hear the modulation part of it on a guitar. My wife was giving the baby a bath and she started crying so I just said screw it and made the demo short. It has a very clean widening effect with the modulation LFO down.

Stereo Modulator is an AU3 effect that converts mono sound into stereo, with an adjustable width and optional stereo modulation.

It works by using a bank of randomized stereo de-correlators that apply micro-delays introduce random differences between the spectrums of the left and right audio channels. In its output we hear a natural sense of space that is not present in mono recordings. It’s similar to the sound space one gets from using a stereo reverb plugin except that it is tight and clear, without any feeling of echo.

It can operate either as a static effect or it can be gently modulated by a low-frequency oscillator. The modulation is akin to the sound of a Leslie speaker, except that it doesn’t do any pitch shifting, so the output remains focused and tuning is not compromised.

This effect is especially useful for mixing electric guitars together with vocals. Using Stereo Modulator on the guitars, we can push them out to the sides, creating a space in the centre for the vocal to cut through, without needing to reduce the volume of the guitars.

NOTE: Stereo Modulator is an AU3 plugin only, not a standalone app. To use it, you will need an audio unit host app such as Garageband or Audiobus.

Author View comments Tags Tags: , , , , , , , ,

The Mono/Poly analog synthesizer appeared in 1981 at the same time as the acclaimed Polysix. Not only was it a fat-sounding four-VCO monophonic synthesizer, it featured a revolutionary design that allowed it to also be used as a four-voice polyphonic synthesizer, which helped cement its legendary status.

The long-awaited “KORG iMono/Poly” iPad/iPhone app completely reproduces all features of the original Mono/Poly. Four VCOs and a rich array of modulation allow a wide range of detailed sound design. New functionality such as two multi-effects units and eight virtual patches are also provided. In addition, the seamless integration that you expect from KORG’s iOS apps will fit perfectly into your music making process. The Mono/Poly has been reborn for today’s world, bringing you a unique and legendary sound.

What’s New in Version 1.0.1

Eight virtual patches provide the ultimate expansion of the Mono/Poly’s distinctive sound-design potential. Two multi-effect units are also provided, allowing you to create complex and broad-ranging sounds with complete freedom.

There’s no need to open individual screens for specific functions, or to move back and forth between them.

• Produce music in conjunction with KORG Gadget
iMono/Poly can be used in conjunction with “KORG Gadget,” the music production DAW app that has won numerous prizes within Japan and around the world. When you install both apps, iMono/Poly appears as the “Montpellier” gadget within KORG Gadget.
