Quantum MIDI Sequencer For iOS
Author View comments Tags Tags: , , , , ,

Quantum is a performance midi sequencer which approaches music composition with an interactive creation processes – sometimes referred to as ‘noodling’.

Where pattern or piano-role sequencers are good for music forms (intro/verse/chorus etc) or grid entry, Quantum’s approach is built around the idea of a step being the focus – think of the step as a single note or chord written on a music sheet then add a lot of extra notation (like probability of playing or ornamentation say).

These highly detailed steps are then aligned into sequences (think melodies) that loop. You can have any length up to 64, but these can be further split into 4 sub-sequences that have their own set of sequencer parameters (like tempo, play direction, transpose etc).

To enter step parameters such as note pitch, velocity, gated length etc, 16 general faders are available which allow you to draw, drag, select copy/paste, inc/dec & link together to edit values. These are also midi learnable (midi cc or nrpn) to allow you to use control surfaces or midi controllers.

To aid you with faster control Quantum has loop actions which you can program in to carry out tasks when a sequence loops – e.g. transpose, randomise, start or load another sequence etc.

With up to 24 sequences playing Quantum introduces a mixer page allowing you to blend midi velocities. Built on the MidiSequencer engine, midi FX, devices & Controllers are now possible per sequence.

So why would Quantum be good for your setup? There are many midi enabled IOS & hardware synths that produce exotic timbres if you send them fast & varied midi controls that you just would not hear with keyboard playing or slow tempo tunes. Also, Quantum, embraces experimentation in melody creation and by copy/pasting allowing quick setup of arpeggios & counterpoint tunes that you can create & manipulate on the fly!

note : This app sends midi information – you need to use it in conjunction with any midi enabled iOS synth app (e.g. Sunrizer) to hear sounds

MIDISTEP UPDATE IS PACKED WITH FEATURES
Author View comments Tags Tags: , , , , , ,

Wicked new update for midiSTEP!! midiSTEPs is a powerful and fun MIDI step sequencer app that sends MIDI note and CC messages to other music apps and external synthesizers. It was designed to be super easy to use in a way that’s similar to the SH-101 sequencer, where you can just quickly enter a few keyboard notes and you’re ready to hit play and hear your sequence. At the same time, it also incorporates many ideas from other classic and modern sequencers, allowing you to set control values per step, mute and skip existing steps, switch between multiple patterns and parts, sync and link patterns in various ways, and modify your sequences.

What’s New in Version 1.5.0

Midisteps MIDI Sequencer Supports AU Audio Units

midiSTEPs

As of today (the day I’m posting this) Midisteps is the second app to host AU Audio Unit extensions. One advantage using AU instead of Coremidi is that with AU you can use multiple instances of an AU app for example in this case you can get up to four iSEM synths running at once!

midiSTEPs is a powerful and fun MIDI step sequencer app that sends MIDI note and CC messages to other music apps and external synthesizers. It was designed to be super easy to use in a way that’s similar to the SH-101 sequencer, where you can just quickly enter a few keyboard notes and you’re ready to hit play and hear your sequence. midiSTEPs was designed from the ground up as a touch-based iPad sequencer app, so it’s super easy and intuitive to enter, edit and play sequences.

What’s New in Version 1.1

New:
Set random trigger probability, per step
Set randomization of velocity and length of notes, per part
Keyboard can be limited to a major or minor scale
Keyboard goes two octaves lower
Auto-hold option for press step screen, set in Settings app
Audiobus

Bonus feature: AU Extension hosting!

iSem and Midisteps Audio Unit

Please note:
– this is an experimental feature for a new iOS 9 API, keep expectations in check
– that said, it’s a whole lot of fun…
– there is currently only one released synthesizer AU Extension, iSEM
– you can run multiple instances of iSEM within midiSTEPs, automate parameters per step, and more
– AU extension effects are not currently supported, just synths
– certain things can sometimes cause clicks with iSEM: fast runs of notes, ties with some patches, etc
– if using multiple AU parts, use the audio mixer popup to lower individual parts and overall volume to avoid clipping
– experiment with audio buffer size, other AU extensions when they’re released, recording via AB and let me know what works and what doesn’t
– this is a step towards the future but it’s not ready for your live set yet… experiment in your spare time and have fun

Legacy midiSTEPs features:
64 step sequencer based on the classic SH-101 sequencer
Set note, chord or rest per step
Set accent and tie per step
Set CC, velocity, length parameters per step

Set start and end points within sequence
Edit individual steps
Transpose, loop or one shot, start and pattern sync options

FL Studio Mobile For iPad

App Attack Ep 003 “FL Studio Mobile IAA Animoog Midi Sequence” – Lots of viewers are asking if I would use an iPad when composing for TV shows. I have songs in several TV shows and I do use the iPad from time to time to get ideas started. My favorite app for sequencing midi sequences is FL Studio Mobile. I just really like the piano roll and editing features. They just make sense to me. I also like using IAA (Inter App Audio) when using FL Studio Mobile. IAA is Apple’s proprietary method of routing apps internally. I slammed this little jam down in about 20 minutes. I was inspired by a preset in Animoog. It was used subtly. Other sounds were from the FL Studio Mobile synth.

Download the loops I created in this video here: http://ipadloops.com/free-loops/ipadloops_com_suspense.zip

Thanks for watching and please subscribe so I can continue to create more videos and free loops.

FL Studio Mobile HD allows you to create and save complete multi-track music projects on your iPad, iPhone and iPod Touch. You can even load the FL Studio Mobile projects into the ‘FL Studio Desktop PC’ version* and take them to the next level.
