Midibus iOS MIDI clock sync generator and monitor

MidiBus is a MIDI clock sync generator and monitor. Now it may not be much to look at really but hey it is a utility and is does exactly what it is supposed to do and that is to function as a MIDI clock sync master device.

Choose your bpm, time signature and MIDI destinations. Press the play button and all selected apps and devices will receive a synchronised, rock-solid MIDI sync clock source.

On the flipside, monitor the MIDI clock signals of apps and devices (including MidiBus itself) and measure how accurate and stable they really are. You might be very surprised at the results.

What’s New in Version 1.5
– MIDI controlled Tap Tempo (via MIDI learn)

“A new feature that allows you to use an external MIDI controller to ‘tap’ the tempo even while the clock is running.
It works by ‘learning’ the event you wish to use to set the tempo. Here’s how to do it:
1. Make sure that the controller you want to use is being monitored. On the Monitor panel in the app check that the connected controller (can be another app, hardware or wifi/bluetooth port) has a blue arrow/clock icon (not red X).
2. Flip to the Transport panel and press the ‘bpm’ field to expand the Tap Tempo controls.
3. Slide the ‘learn’ switch to ‘On’ and generate your external MIDI event that you wish to use to control the tempo. The event must be either a note, controller (value > 0) or a program change. Once the learn function has seen one of these events it remembers that event as the tap tempo trigger (hex value of learnt event shown in the textfield) and automatically switches out of learn mode.
Subsequent taps of the learn event will set the tempo of the clock signal. You can do this while the clock is running (this applies to the ‘Tap Tempo’ button in the app too in this release. The learnt event is channelised in that subsequent events must be on the same channel as the learnt event to trigger the tempo adjustment. Regards, Nic.”

– Tap Tempo now also adjusts BPM while clock is running
– Support for forthcoming companion app
– Minor fixes, MidiBus library 1.35 update

Audiobus Remote

With Audiobus Remote, transport your Audiobus-compatible music apps’ controls onto a second iPad or iPhone: it’s a second screen for your Audiobus session, powered by Bluetooth LE and Apple’s iBeacon technology.

— Audiobus Remote requires iPad 3, iPad Mini, iPhone 4s, iPod Touch 5th Generation and newer devices —

Start Audiobus Remote for the first time, then simply hold it near your other iPad or iPhone running Audiobus: the two devices will pair immediately, and you’ll see the apps running on your Audiobus device appear on Audiobus Remote’s control surface. You will see all the Audiobus Connection Panel controls you’re used to, including app switching, transport and record controls.

Apps can also define Remote Triggers, providing access to app-specific functions within Audiobus Remote. For example:

– Record or toggle individual loops in Loopy HD.
– Trigger drum samples in DM-1.
– Move between presets in Bias FX and JamUp.
– Change presets and adjust effect controls in Holderness Media’s effects apps including Johnny and Caramel.
– Trigger individual sections in Sector, and switch modes.
– Play a mini version of SoundPrism Electro in Audiobus Remote.

All this on a second screen, while you can stay focused in one app on your main device.

Audiobus Remote. More space for play.

Discover apps with Remote Triggers on our compatible apps directory at http://audiob.us/apps

Audiobus Remote requires the Audiobus app and two Bluetooth Low Energy-compatible iOS devices: iPhone 4S, iPad 3 or iPad Mini, iPod Touch 5th gen, and newer.

Polychord iPad App

Here’s another example of syncing apps within the same iOS device using virtual midi. This example is using Polychord and MoDrum. Polychord is one of the first few apps to use this new feature but all apps will support this very soon.

The future of iOS music. Polychord virtual MIDI (BETA preview) from Shoulda Woulda Coulda on Vimeo.

The upcoming MIDI update to polychord lets you do some exciting and powerful new tricks with your iPad. Now you’ll be able to have your music apps talk to each other, while they run in the background, and use polychord to control them.

In this video we show how polychord can control another app (MoDrum) running in the background — all through virtual MIDI, all without any cables. Polychord sends MIDI clock signals out, keeping everything in sync.

Stay tuned — we’ll have even more exciting things to share soon as we test out polychord with some of the iPad synthesizers that are supporting this game-changing new feature.

Yamaha iOS Midi Interface For iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch

Yamaha i-MX1 Midi Interface

The i-MX1 by Yamaha was just recently announced. It is not yet available but we have some info here from Yamaha.

Yamaha introduces the i-MX1 on the Frankfurter Music fair – a MIDI interface that‘s connected to the Apple iPad and thus offering vast possibilities to control MIDI equipment.

The Apple iPad has proven itself as a very handy tool, combining a very nice touch panel with a reasonable size. It has sold in large quantities. On Winter NAMM 2011 Yamaha introduced a series of Apps that will allow a wireless controlling of the MOTIF XF Music Production Synthesizer.

To be able to control synthesizers that won‘t allow a wireless connection to the iPad, Yamaha now presents a MIDI interface that‘s connected to the iPad.

In a small, black device the i-MX1 carries the needed electronics and two connectors for the included adapter cables which represent the MIDI input and output (with the well known 16 MIDI channels each).

It does not just connect to the iPad, but to the iPhone and the iPod Touch, too. Since these devices are much smaller, they are even more handy controllers.

The i-MX1 is compatible to the drivers provided by the iPad-OS (iOS, Core MIDI), there‘s no need for special drivers. So even thirdparty applications that are using the iOS drivers can use the i-MX1 as MIDI-Interface.

The i-MX1 will help the iPad to continue its triumphal procession to the shores of ‘old school’ MIDI.
