Band Creator and Audiobus Demo Review

Band Creator

Today we’re going to have a look at an app called Band Creator by Wojciech Janiszewski. Band Creator is a simple drum and bass accompaniment app for iOS. You can play live into it using a microphone or an instrument on the input slot in Audiobus. I chose to put Audiobus to the test. I’m using an app called Real Guitar as an input device and it’s going to Band Creator as in the output slot.

It took Band Creator a few tries to get the rhythmic timing right. I found using an external metronome helped but still even with the metronome and simple spot on playing it had a tough time. It could be something to do with Real Guitar who knows. Perhaps I’ll do another demo using the microphone input and an acoustic guitar. I chose Audiobus this time because this is a new feature for the app and there wasn’t anything online demoing it. We did finally get it right though as you see in this demo. It would be nice to have a metronome built into Band Creator. I had to use an external one. The tempo it guessed was a little slow but it was close enough. Also there is no stop and start from the beginning button just play and pause and you can’t edit the chords or timing once recorded. The sounds are really basic. Would be nice to have access to higher quality realistic sounds.

MiMix virtual mixer for Audiobus

Unlike many of the other music app blogs this handy little app did NOT pass me by. I posted about MiMix back in April of 2015 and now here we are with a version 2 update and what an update! Now MixMix, the virtual mixer for Audiobus, features support for Audiobus remote, state saving (this is a really nice feature), virtual midi support, and much more. Please read on.

MiMix virtual mixer for Audiobus

With MiMiX You can take total control of mixing of Your favorite Audiobus enabled apps’ outputs in the most convenient way. Just insert MiMiX into the Output Slot of Audiobus, even into multiple chains to mix the sound of the connected input or effect apps. You can even insert MiMIX into the input slot to send the mix to an other app, like a DAW to record the mix.

Borderlands Granular V2

Borderlands Granular is a new musical instrument for the iPad. Touch, transform, and explore sound with this new interface for granular synthesis, a technique that involves the superposition of small fragments of sound, or “grains”, to create complex, evolving timbres and textures.

Borderlands emphasizes gestural interaction over knobs and sliders. Create, drag, and throw pulsing clouds of grains over a landscape of audio files, or use the built-in accelerometer to sculpt sound with gravity.

Borderlands comes ready to play with default sample content included, but you can also load and export your own sounds via Audiobus, Audioshare, and real time input from the mic or external audio interfaces. Re-sample recordings made within the app on-the-fly for layers-upon-layers of granulation.

You can also improvise alongside the app – touches and parameters may be recorded, looped, stored, and duplicated. Entire configurations of clouds, sounds, and automation can be saved into presets, or “scenes,” that may be recalled at a later time, allowing Borderlands to seamlessly transition between the studio and the stage.
