Speldosa Wintergatan Music Box

Speldosa (Wintergatan Music Box) is an Audio Unit instrument, the result of a unique collaboration between Klevgrand and the Swedish artist Wintergatan/Martin Molin. Wintergatan has primarily worked in the physical world (the Marble Machine is probably the most astonishing example), while Klevgrand has performed its craft within the digital sphere. When these two worlds now meet, the result is something that both visually and aurally inspires the creation of new compelling melodies.

Speldosa (Swedish for “Music Box”) is the essence of the shared beliefs of Klevgrand and Wintergatan, and their fascination with minimalism. A simple melody played on a music box can contain an equal amount of emotional power as any symphonic work. There is something about the music box sound that never ceases to fascinate.

The instrument itself has been meticulously recorded by Wintergatan and transformed into a playable digital instrument plugin. It features four different models (Modern, Vintage, Antique, and Eternal = Reversed), two different Room models, and an algorithmic reverb.

Wintergatan about Speldosa:

“I created the sound by sampling a music box using an acoustic guitar as resonance box. I chose the best samples and it was instant magic. The Music Box went on to become the sonic signature for my two bands, Detektivbyrån and Wintergatan, both recognised for their unique sound. The Speldosa has been the secret sauce in my music career and i hope other musicians finds it as useful as I have.

There is a special quality to this exact music box sound that lifts it above the novelty feeling of a toy and turns it into a real music instrument. It just sounds so good, that’s really it. And it is a sound that makes you write music instantly – the music comes from the sound itself.

During the collaboration with Klevgrand, when they sent me the first beta version of the plugin, i ended up playing around with the sound for three hours, losing track of time. I wrote three songs that day when i was scheduled to actually do something else. That’s what the sound does to me, and i think it will do the same for others.”

Features:

– Four different music box characters
– Two room ambiences
– Spacious reverb
– Optional vibrato
– Output level

This unique virtual instrument introduces a new “Audio Model” format, capable of containing thousands of waves extracted from ordinary audio files. These waves – and how they’re structured – lays the ground for how Tomofon generates audio, resulting in a highly flexible and instantly expressive instrument. On one hand it can sound very organic, even lifelike, and on the other, like something out of this world. Whether you want to play around with the Audio Model Starter Pack (instruments & voices) and factory presets, or import your own audio to shape your own unique soundscapes – it is fair to say that you are in for a creative journey.

How does it work?

Tomofon converts audio files into a large set of oscillating waves, which are then mapped into pitch zones where each wave represents one layer (a bit similar to how a sampler structures different velocity zones). The main difference is that since each zone is populated with waves instead of ordinary samples, the synth engine can morph between them (both layers and zones). This makes all transitions between zones and layers continuous and seamless.

Create and share your own unique sounds

A significant feature of this plug-in is that users can import their own audio files and create new and unique Audio Models. Ordinary audio files (preferably with monophonic content) can easily be imported and distributed into different pitch zones over the keyboard range, either automatically or manually. Doing an automatic import is basically a one-click process which instantly results in a proper playable Audio Model. A manual import gives the user full control of which waves should end up in which pitch zone. Last but not least you can easily share your own created Audio Models with others.

Tomofon comes pre-loaded with a pack of 124 Audio Models based on high quality audio recordings of multiple expressions. These models includes several instruments like strings, vocals, brass, woodwind, guitars and more. Along with these models there are over 180 presets to get you going right away. From there on you can venture further and start creating Audio Models based on your own audio files and experiment on the types of sounds they can grow to be.

Features

– Wide selection of factory presets and Audio Models
– Integrated audio sample importer and Audio Model editor
– Pitch and (layer) depth envelopes that can be edited by the user
– Envelope times can be controlled separately via MIDI velocity
– Several LFO:s (including Sample and Hold with randomness)

– Polyphonic legato playback where started notes syncs envelopes with currently playing ones

Pitch Drift Free Cassette Vibrato Effect
Author View comments Tags Tags: , , , , , , , ,

Free vibrato app for iOS

Pitch Drift is a free AUv3 cassette style vibrato effect plugin by Baby Audio that introduces organic-sounding pitch fluctuations. It can range from subtle instabilities that make your instruments sound more natural and less sterile – to intense pitch drifting that will make your tracks clearly out of tune.

Controls:
Pitch Drift lets you control the depth and speed of the pitch fluctuations in a simple interface. It is powered by the “Drift” algorithm in Baby Audio’s Super VHS plugin and offers the same natural and pleasing fluctuation effect.

Inspired by real instruments:
One of the appeals of acoustic instruments is that they are never 100% in tune 100% of the time. These subtle pitch fluctuations compound when you bring multiple instruments together in a mix, making the music sound richer and more dynamic.

However, in the computer-era this concept is sometimes lost. Pitch Drift makes it fast and easy to break the spell of digital pitch perfection and get your tracks to vibrate a little more. It generally works best at subtle levels on sustained tonal instruments or entire mix busses. As a rule of thumb, the less sustained your source is, the faster you want the speed parameter to be set.

Hainbach Fluss Granular Synth by Bram Bos

Hainbach Fluss Granular Synth by Bram Bos

Fluss is a sonic playground designed by Bram Bos and Berlin-based musician Hainbach to let you explore granular synthesis in a hands-on way. The playful touch UI invites anything from live performance, experimentation to learning and mastering the granular concept.

Multiple plugins: Import, Record or Live Process

You can import your own WAVs (standalone & AUv3 Instrument plugin), Record audio (Record effect plugin) or live-process sound (Process effect plugin) to create anything from drones and granular echoes to moving microtonal audio textures.

Designed for touch: Kinetic Sliders

All sliders and XY pads are linked to a physics model which lets you flick and throw them around. Minimise the friction for endless bouncing motion, as an innovative substitute for traditional LFOs and modulation. There was never a better reason for using a touchscreen for music.

Shimmer Feedback effect

Like a shimmer reverb, except it feeds the processed audio back into the grain engine. This lets you create an endless loop of pitch-shifting spaciousness, turning even the simplest of sounds into massive woolly mammoths.

– 3 Voice grain engine, each with an independent playhead
– Filter inspired by the Oberheim Xpander, including its resonant Phase filter
– Kinetic sliders and pads for playful interaction with the sound
– Universal design (iPhone and iPad; iPad Air 2 or higher recommended)
– Custom scales, unquantised mode and even Scala-import for microtonal experiments
– Use WAVs, record audio or load the app as a live-processing audio effect
– Real world tested as an instrument in numerous live performances by Hainbach
