Patterning is a deep and flexible drum machine unlike any you’ve encountered before. With its elegant circular interface, Patterning transforms the iPad into a seriously inspiring tool for making beats. Most are aware that I am a HUGE fan of Patterning AND also a content developer for the app. My recent kit “Dj Puzzle Funkstep” was announced in this update and I am so happy to be part of it. Olympia Noise Co is a master of crafting ingenuity for the touch screen. Olympia Noise have a consistent track record for producing some of the most useful and interesting apps. Chordion, Ondes, and dot Melody set the bar high and they did not disappoint following up with their latest app Patterning.

Important! Patterning will update the database on first launch. This may take up to a minute or two to complete. Hang tight!

Sample Library
• Deleting samples is now possible. Tap “EDIT” in the sample library then select the samples you’d like to delete.
• Batch import of samples from iTunes File Sharing as an import option. Drag your samples / folders into Patterning’s iTunes Files Sharing Documents folder, then choose the import option to quickly move all your samples into your library.
• Ability to rename samples.
• Crop to new sample. Use sample start/end points as crop points for a new sample!
• Added sample use policy. See “i” on help screen.
• Improvements to sample search speed.
• Improvements to memory usage, particularly when using large samples on multiple tracks.
• Fixed a bug that could cause the app to crash with certain (long) audio files.
• Fixed bug which caused CHH and OHH sample folders to be swapped.
• Added warning for loading large audio files (> 5 MB)

• Fixed some issues with scrolling and zooming in timeline.
• Fixed bug which caused MIDI note names in lowest octave to be incorrectly displayed.
• Stability improvements
• Added cancel option when deleting songs.
• Added cancel option when opening/creating new song.
• Fixed bug which could cause Patterning to be unable to launch in Inter App Audio host apps.
• Fixed bug which caused MIDI Clock to send even when disabled.
• Added “Send Always” option for MIDI clock sync.
• Use “Open In” from other apps to import custom artwork for your drumkit.
• Renamed “EUCLIDEAN MODE” to “DIVIDE MODE” to avoid confusion.

Free DSI Tempest Samples

Free Industrial EBM Patterning kit created and sampled from a DSI Tempest drum machine.

The following video demonstrates how one can “jam” live by triggering different patterns within Patterning’s song section. I prepared a free Industrial/EBM kit in Patterning .onps file format. I created all of the samples with a DSI Tempest drum machine and ran them through an Empirical Labs Distressor.

How To Open Patterning Kits From The Internet

How to open Patterning kit from the internet

Hello all, here are the simple steps to open a patterning kit from an address on the internet. The simplest and most common way to share Patterning kits is to export/upload them to Dropbox and share the url. Follow these simple steps to download a Patterning .onps kit.

STEP 1 Click on the Dropbox link. When someone uploads a kit to Dropbox and links to it on a website like Facebook for example it will look like this: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2w83beyj8umvosh/tempest1.onps?dl=0

(YOU WILL NEED THE DROPBOX APP ON YOUR DEVICE Click to get Dropbox)

Now a window will open like the one in the image below. Simply click “save to my Dropbox” (you may have to sign in to your Dropbox account).

STEP 2 Open your Dropbox app and select the kit then click the little box/arrow in the upper right hand corner and choose “open in” Patterning.

Step 3 Now in Patterning hit the Drum Kits tab and select the kit you just imported. That’s it!

Alternate instructions for storing locally and organizing your files with Audioshare:

STEP 2 (alternate for storing locally in audioshare) Open the Audioshare app and click the little green box with a down arrow in it. The one at the bottom left next to the web browser icon. Now select “Dropbox”.

STEP 3 Import the kit, the file with .onps file extension.

STEP 4 Once imported you select the .onps file and then you will get an option to open in “copy to Patterning” and from there you can select Patterning.

STEP 5 Now you can open the kit with bonus beat patterns by using the File/Open. It will not appear in the kits section unless you save it as a kit on your own.

One of my all time favorite drum synth apps for iOS just got another update. Elastic Drums, is a music app with 6 channels of synthesized drum sounds, a step sequencer and 4 fx channels, all tweakable in an elastic way. The sound range is from classical analog beatbox sounds to the weirdest effect drone soundscapes.

What’s New in Version 1.6.2
– iOS 9 ready (Fixed font bug, newest Audiobus)
– Bugfix for crash, when loading a deleted preset
– Jam knob settings get stored for each preset
– Midi in is „understanding“ incoming velocity values now
– Ability to tweak effects with sequencer stopped
– 25 Basic Groove presets by App Sound

Because all sounds get generated in realtime, the app is cpu heavy! iPhones 5 and greater can handle it with no problem, on iPhone 4s effects 3 and 4 get switched off by the engine automatically to save some cpu power. iPhone 4 and iPad1 are NOT recommended!
