Andrew Huang Flip Sampler

Flip Sampler, the sample-based music making app conceptualized by music producer and YouTuber Andrew Huang, has just been updated to version 1.4. This update adds new stock projects, over 100 new stock samples, and a much requested new feature, the Looping Envelope. Located on the revamped Sample tab, engaging the Looping Envelope means any selected portion of a sample can be looped while it’s playing. This allows for samples of notes or chords to be sustained indefinitely, as well as opening up a new world of sound design possibilities within Flip—from ambient/pad sounds, to granular glitching, to audio-rate looping which can turn any sample into a playable polyphonic synth voice. A “Fade” parameter crossfades the transitions between the loop points if a smoother sound is desired. Adding even more power, the loop’s start point, length, and crossfade amount can be automated from Flip’s Automation page. Like all of Flip’s automation lanes, each can have its own independent length, leading to fun and creative polymetric variations. Flip Sampler, now in its third year on iOS, also made a quiet Android debut in November 2022, and thanks to the feedback of its great user community many improvements have been made since. The 1.4 update adds Ableton Link support for Android devices (already present in the iOS version) making Flip Sampler one of only a few Android apps that provides support for this handy sync technology created by Ableton. Generally speaking, Flip Sampler is one of only a small handful of professional music making apps available for both iOS and Android.

Andrew Huang Flip Sampler

Here’s a quick session with the Flip sampler app by Andrew Huang , just sampling some gear and arranging a beat. There’s no talking in this one folks.

Skip to the beat sequencing at 3:30 mins

Flip was designed for a fast and intuitive workflow. As soon as you record a sound it’s available to be played on drum pads as well as being mapped across a keyboard. Sounds can be subtly shaped or entirely transformed using the built-in effects and easy-to-use editing tools.

You can record a quantized or unquantized performance on the pads or keyboard. There is also a full piano roll where you can enter and edit notes and velocities.

Record knob movements or draw automation by hand to bring even more life to your sounds. Every automation lane can also have its own independent length, for polymetric and generative music possibilities.

Create up to 16 different sections for your song and drag and drop them into any order to create your arrangement.

Mixing and mastering tools allow you to finish a full track without ever leaving your phone. You can export your full track, or hit the tape icon and record the live output of the app while you tweak anything on the fly. Both options allow you to capture individual track stems as well!

A performance page lets you trigger your patterns live while controlling a global filter, assignable pitch bends and reverb sends, and a random fill generator.

Artist packs are available in-app at $3.99 or less, which include original sounds and projects from Andrew Huang, Bad Snacks, Rachel K Collier, Cuckoo, Chuck Sutton, Pusher, and more on the way all the time.

  • iPad Loops is an iOS music production blog dedicated to exposing the best iPad apps musicians, producers, and Djs. This is not a database of every app. It is, however, one of useful recommendations from someone with many years in music production. I try to update it on a daily basis (ok sometimes every two days) and I do my best to post useful apps only. My name is Jason Donnelly (Dj Puzzle). You might know me from my royalty free loop packs and sound design. Some of the apps that contain my sounds are Synth One, EG Segments, Hammerhead, Retronyms AudioCopy, Audio Evolution Mobile, LP-5, iPRO.DJSAMPLER, Looptastic. My work is published by Roland, Antares, Magix, Soundtrack Loops, Sample Logic, Acoustica, Loopmasters and many more. Subscribe to our RSS feed below to get updated when new apps are posted.
